Future Directions in Menopause Research: Optimizing Midlife Health of Women Roundtable – Thursday, May 16th, 2024, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM ET

“The Future Directions in Menopause Research: Optimizing Midlife Health of Women Roundtable” is the launch event for NIH’s Women’s Health Roundtable Series on important women’s health topics as part of the White House Women’s Health Research Initiative. The roundtable series will be led by NIH institute, center, and office leadership and will engage the research community and the public to bring greater awareness to female-specific health conditions (e.g., menopause and endometriosis), as well as diseases and conditions that predominantly affect women (e.g., autoimmune diseases), and present or progress differently in women (e.g., heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, etc.).

This launch event will be hosted by the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) and the Office of Disease Prevention (ODP). This roundtable aims to inform and spark dialogue around the science on menopause and highlight NIH-supported work in the menopausal research domain. It also furthers initiatives outlined within the Executive Order on Advancing Women’s Health Research and Innovation to identify and explore gaps in women’s health and diseases and conditions that arise during women’s midlife and later years.

Afternoon Tea Time: Changing the Narrative and Reframing Women’s Health – Wednesday, May 15, 4 – 5 pm ET

In observance of National Women’s Health Week, please bring your favorite cup of tea and join us for an hour-long discussion. Everyone wants to be their best self when it comes to achieving their health goals, but it can be challenging when faced with competing pressures as people that identify as women. Some of these pressures include the expectations placed by others or ourselves, on our identities related to motherhood (or choosing to be childfree), as a spouse/partner, daughter/sister, colleague, etc. Women must navigate these pressures that are influenced by our cultures and lived experiences as well as within our structural/built environments. Different cultures define health and wellness in different ways. The definition of health are we operating from, is not a one size fits all. Recognizing that health is affected by a lot of stigma, trying to achieve optimal health is different for everyone and those expectations can negatively impact us. During this one-hour session, we will foster a supportive environment where we can “fill our cups” by sharing and uplifting each other and explore what health means to each of us. Additionally, we will provide some resources that can help you take steps to support your individual health goals.

Hosted by the OASH Office on Women’s Health Region 8 Office.

This event is open to individuals that reside in Region 8 states including CO, MT, ND, SD, UT, and WY. If you live in Region 8 and are interested in attending, please email Susana Calderon, Regional Women’s Health Analyst, susana.calderon@hhs.gov

The FDA Office of Women’s Health (OWH), will host a free virtual public webinar titled: Osteoporosis: A perspective for 2024 presented by Marcella Donovan Walker, MD, MS.

Strong bones are essential to health and quality of life. Osteoporosis and fragility fractures are common and can be debilitating but there are steps that can be taken to help reduce the risk. Because osteoporosis is asymptomatic until the first clinical fracture, many women do not realize they are at risk. This lecture will summarize the current approach to assessing bone health, as well as preventing and treating osteoporosis with a focus on postmenopausal women.
