Infected in 1988 and diagnosed with HIV in 1991 at the age of 16, Maria is a human rights activist, HIV and LGBT advocate, educator, consultant, and speaker on HIV. She is the co-author of From a Warrior’s Passion and Pain, a real-life account of her 28-year battle with HIV and AIDS, and has been featured on billboards and in print and broadcast media. Maria mentors hundreds of women to become advocates. She works to fight stigma and helps educate millions of people around the world. Recognized by many for her work, Maria is the founder of the largest online support group with members from all continents, in both Spanish and English.
