Nursing moms who work outdoors need creative solutions for time and space to express milk. These can include mobile and temporary options that provide privacy, such as tents, portable lactation spaces, and vehicles. Helping a mother have direct access to her baby may also work in some situations. Women who work indoors (e.g., inside processing plants) often use office areas, storage rooms, or other small spaces spaces to express milk. Women can use a personal cooler to store their milk.

Feature Slides

  • Video: Reiter Affiliated Farms in California provides pop-up tents and covered vehicles for nursing mothers who work in the berry fields.

  • Agricultural farms and other outdoor industries have many mobile solutions that support nursing moms.

  • A lightweight mobile tent with a folding chair inside provides privacy for women to express milk.

  • A portable lactation station retrofitted from a new portable restroom provides privacy for expressing milk. If nearby access to water is not possible, a portable restroom with water could be considered.

  • The cab of farm equipment or logging trucks could be used for privacy in agricultural or forestry settings.

  • An employee could use her car or the company vehicle to express milk. Windshield visors help keep the car cool and provide privacy.

  • At a seafood processing plant, the conference room can be used by nursing women to express milk.

  • One agricultural firm provides a portable water system for employees working in the field. Water flows from a barrel on a large truck through water pipes.
