Transportation and Warehousing

The transportation industry uses a variety of creative solutions to support nursing women. Permanent or flexible spaces can be created in main office buildings using small offices, storage areas, or other small spaces. Mobile options, such as portable lactation spaces, can accommodate women who work in the field. Companies can also partner with businesses along an employee's transportation route to accommodate nursing mothers who travel as part of their job.

Warehousing firms often have large spaces that can accommodate a small milk expression space by enclosing a corner or other area with partitions or screens. Employers will want to examine the employee's typical work schedule, available space, and options that will help employees feel relaxed and comfortable.

Feature Slides

  • A California ferry service provides private space to express milk in the captain's office on each of their four boats. Space is also available in the port office.

  • A bus company purchased new portable restrooms with the toilets removed, and placed them in safe employee-only locations along the bus route. The space includes a chair and a small flat surface for the breast pump.

  • A simple plywood screen was constructed in the corner of a larger warehouse area in one company to create privacy for milk expression. Colorful posters decorate the plywood.

  • A lightweight mobile tent pops up and folds down easily for a quick temporary solution either outdoors or within a large warehouse setting. A folding chair will need to be provided.
