Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis (OS-tee-oh-poh-ROH-sis) is a disease of the bones. People with osteoporosis have bones that are weak and break easily. To prevent weak bones, get enough calcium, vitamin D, and exercise. Bones contain calcium so it is important to eat foods high in calcium such as yogurt, milk, tofu, and spinach. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium from the food you eat. Foods high in vitamin D include cooked salmon, milk, and egg yolk. Being active helps your bones by slowing bone loss and improving muscle strength. To learn more about osteoporosis and ways to get strong bones, read our updated fact sheet.
