Binge Eating Disorder

Almost everyone overeats from time to time; but when overeating is regular or uncontrollable, it may actually be binge eating disorder. People with binge eating disorder eat an unusually large amount of food and feel out of control during binges. People with binge eating disorder may:

  • Eat more quickly than usual during binge episodes
  • Eat until they are uncomfortably full
  • Eat when they are not hungry
  • Eat alone because of embarrassment
  • Feel disgusted, depressed, or guilty after overeating

People with binge eating disorder should get help from a health care professional, such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, or clinical social worker. A professional can teach them how to fight the compulsion to binge, exchange unhealthy habits for healthy ones, monitor their eating and moods, and develop effective stress-busting skills.
