Vegetarian Eating
A vegetarian eats mainly plant-based food. These include fruits, vegetables, dried beans and peas, grains, seeds and nuts. With careful planning, vegetarian eating plans can be quite healthy, having less fat and cholesterol and more fiber than meat-based eating plans. Vegetarians can get all the nutrients they need by eating a variety of foods. But they need to make sure that they are getting enough protein, iron, calcium, zinc, and vitamin B12.
Vegetarians fall into three groups:
- Vegans eat only plant-based foods; no meat or animal products, including milk and eggs.
- Lacto-vegetarians consume milk and milk products along with plant-based foods; no eggs.
- Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat eggs, milk and milk products, in addition to plant-based foods.
