Spotlight on Women's Health

Interview with a woman who overcame addiction

A name like Star Rockers might sound hard to live up to. For Star (that's her real name by the way), it was hard. At a young age, she turned to drugs and alcohol to fit in. Catapulted into a life of addiction and loneliness, she finally hit rock bottom when she contemplated throwing herself out of her apartment window. Learn how she found the path to health and what advice she has for all women.

Body Image

Sometimes it is hard to feel good about our bodies, especially when TV, magazines, and movies show us pictures of women that are not true-to-life. Did you know that magazines sometimes edit photos of women on a computer to make them even more "perfect?" No wonder women often struggle with their self-esteem. Our Body Image section will help you learn how to love what you see in the mirror, how to talk to your kids about body image, and more.

What Women Want to Know

Highlights from the womenshealth.gov information and referral center

We received an email from a woman who was concerned that there might be something wrong with her since her period was irregular. We encouraged her to talk with her her doctor. He or she would be able to identify if there was a problem. We gave her links and phone numbers to the following resources.

Girls and Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco

Getting your kids to talk to you about drugs, alcohol, and tobacco might seem tough. But, research shows that having a close relationship with your child makes her or him less likely to try alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes. To start the conversation, ask your daughter to take the quiz, What's in a cigarette? Afterwards, sit down and talk to her about what she learned.
