Karen Petersen

Spotlight on Women's Health

Interview with an HIV-positive woman

Like many women, Karen Petersen thought being on birth control was the only protection she needed when she was having sex. Years later, she was diagnosed with HIV. Now, having lived with HIV for 17 years, she shares her story with us in the hopes of reaching HIV-positive women and those who still believe HIV is a homosexual disease.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day – March 10

Every 35 minutes, a woman tests positive for HIV in the United States. More and more women have become infected with HIV since it was first reported in the early 1980s. Today, about 1 in 4 Americans living with HIV are women. It's time for women to get tested.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) is a nationwide initiative celebrated on March 10 every year to raise awareness of the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls.

O, The Oprah Magazine Ranks Womenshealth.gov as a Top Health Website

It's official! O, The Oprah Magazine, ranked womenshealth.gov as one of the most reliable websites on the Internet. Our cancer information was recommended by Paula A. Johnson, MD, chief of the division of Women's Health at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She says, "I really like womenshealth.gov, a website of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It's broad, with a lot of factual information, but it also has a lot of vetted links. Unlike many other sites, it will steer you to trustworthy places. Think of it as a gateway to the best cancer resources on the Web."

We'd like to thank O, The Oprah Magazine and Dr. Johnson for recognizing our great content!

What Women Want to Know

Highlights from the womenshealth.gov information and referral center

A 45-year-old woman emailed us saying that she thought she was experiencing menopause. About 2 years ago, her periods started changing. Sometimes they were heavier than they were before, and sometimes they were lighter. She said she was otherwise healthy and just wanted to know if these irregularities in her period were normal signs of menopause.

We encouraged her to talk with her doctor who would be able to identify if she was going through menopause. We referred her to womenshealth.gov, which offers a wealth of menopause information, and provided links and phone numbers for additional resources and organizations.
