Media AdvisoryAugust 11, 2004 The Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office on Women’s Health, in collaboration with the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), and the National Medical Association (NMA), will sponsor the 2004 Minority Women’s Health Summit entitled Women of Color, Taking Action for a Healthier Life: Progress, Partnerships and Possibilities. More than 500 policy makers, healthcare providers, community organizations, members of academia, and individuals will address health care issues for women of color. The 2004 summit will focus on key areas of importance in minority women's health, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Health screenings, such as blood pressure and cholesterol, will be available in the Wellness Center, as well as lively fitness demonstrations lead by health and fitness professionals. Speakers include, HHS’ Rear Admiral, Cristina V. Beato, MD, FAAFP, Acting Assistant Secretary for Health; and New York State Health Commissioner, Dr. Antonia Novello . Additional speakers include Mary Hayashi, an award-winning author and among this country's most accomplished advocates for expanding the delivery and coverage of healthcare; Hydeia Broadbent, an AIDS activist for more than 15 years; and Lillian Tom-Orme, born and raised on the Navajo Indian reservation in New Mexico.
