This fact sheet summarizes past, present, and future research at the NIH on type 2 diabetes. Thirty years ago, diagnosis and incidence of the disease was rare, due in part to the rarity of obesity in the population. Today, NIH is focusing its efforts on researching treatments and educating the public on preventative care measures as well as treatment after onset.
