This fact sheet summarizes past, present, and future research at the NIH on type 1 diabetes. Lack of proper diagnoses and reliable glucose tests contributed to high mortality rates in earlier decades, but current genetic research, advances in technology and a variety of effective treatments have led to vastly improved quality of care for type 1 diabetes sufferers.
