I write about the interplay of food and nutrition—a constantly morphing subject area—so I take much of what I read in the news with a grain of salt. Every so often though, a new study is so compelling it stops me in my tracks. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s study on the top antioxidant-rich foods was one of those.
For years we’ve known about the significance of antioxidants (compounds in plant-based foods) and their role in preventing heart disease, and cancer, and in improving the immune system, memory, and eyesight. But until now, it was impossible to quantify just how much antioxidant power—known as Total Antioxidant Capacity—was in an apple compared to an orange. Now we know that small red beans top the list, with delicious wild blueberries following a close second.
But don’t feel that you need to treat your diet like a weekly antioxidant tally. My hope is that this feature and the dozen recipes that accompany it will give you more freedom and inspiration to enjoy the variety of incredible foods that nature was so smart to give us.
