You Don’t Have to Have an Alcohol Problem to Have a Problem with Alcohol

This health article is brought to you by our Featured Health Article of the month:
Katherine Cruise
Communications Director with Screening for Mental Health

We've all heard about the dangers of alcohol dependence. But did you realize that excessive use of alcohol sometimes leads to problems specific only to women?

  • At-risk drinking can interfere with your calcium metabolism and bone structure, causing the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Alcohol can interfere with your reproductive functions. For expectant mothers, there is no level of alcohol use that is known to be safe.
  • Women develop alcohol-related diseases in less time than men.
  • Some studies have even shown that as little as one drink per day can increase the risk of breast cancer.

But how much alcohol is too much for you? If you're worried about how alcohol use may be affecting your health, on April 7, 2005, find out where to draw the line. At NATIONAL ALCOHOL SCREENING DAY (NASD), a free event held at more than 3,000 sites nationwide, you have the opportunity to fill out a brief questionnaire that gauges your likelihood for at-risk drinking. For more information about this opportunity, you're invited to read this article from Katherine Cruise, Communications Director with the nonprofit organization, Screening for Mental Health. You will find more information about participating in National Alcohol Screening Day at the end of the article.
